Smart Tips for Enjoying Eid al-Adha Sacrificial Meat

During the celebration of Eid al-Adha, it has become a customary practice to enjoy the meat of sacrificial animals with family. Various dishes such as satay, tongseng, and rendang are typically served on the dining table. However, this situation can pose a dilemma for individuals with high cholesterol levels.

According to the Indonesian Food Composition Data, 100 grams of goat meat contains a total of 9.2 grams of total fat and 70 mg of cholesterol. Meanwhile, 100 grams of beef contains a total of 14 grams of total fat and 70 mg of cholesterol.

What are the safe ways to prepare and enjoy the sacrificial meat?

Dr. Tan Shot Yen, a community nutrition expert, explains that the consumption of sacrificial meat is allowed for everyone, as long as it is done wisely and in moderation.

“It is better to prepare the sacrificial meat in a healthier manner, which means instead of blaming the meat itself, it is better to examine proper processing methods,” says Dr. Tan in a recent e-life session.

Dr. Tan also advises against excessive consumption of sacrificial meat. This can be done by paying attention to portion sizes using the palm of the hand.

“When we talk about adequate portions, each person has a different size. Adequate portion sizes can be measured using one’s own palm, which is the size of the palm for one meal. That is sufficient,” says Dr. Tan.

“However, it is important to remember that the consumption of sacrificial meat should be sufficient, not too much, and one should also not consume excessive amounts of rice. That is also not good,” he adds.

Furthermore, Dr. Tan suggests that the sacrificial meat be prepared using traditional spices that are rich in herbs.

“It is better to prepare the sacrificial meat using traditional spices because traditional cuisine is rich in herbs. In addition to providing aroma, these spices are also rich in antioxidants that are beneficial for the body,” he explains.
